Kateri Proving a ‘Souper’ Purchase for Newtown Anner

In his early days in the Thoroughbred business, Hanzly Albina served the Foustok family’s Buckram Oak Farm as assistant farm manager and later managed Four Roses Thoroughbreds for the same operation.
“As a young person in the business, you don’t get to do a lot, but you get to study a lot,” Albina recollects.
The horseman is now applying that and other knowledge he’s acquired over the years as an advisor to Maurice and Samantha Regan’s Newtown Anner Stud, the breeders of ‘TDN Rising Star’ and GII Rachel Alexandra S. presented by Fasig-Tipton hopeful Souper Sensational (Curlin).

The broodmare band at Newtown Anner numbers around 65, split between their Versailles, Kentucky, farm on a little more than 1000 acres that once belonged to Standardbred operation Brittany Farm on Pisgah Pike. The couple also maintains a farm in Millbrook, New York, as well as a farm in Ireland.
On behalf of Newtown Anner, Albina and partner Nick Sallusto went to $167,000 for then 14-year-old Kateri (Indian Charlie), in foal to Paynter, at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. In signing for the mare, Albina was drawing upon the lessons he gleaned from one of Thoroughbred breeding’s legends.
“I am big fan of John Nerud and I try to learn about everything he did and how his thought process worked. This is a family that connects to him–Cozzene is down the page,” Albina explained, referring to the 1985 Eclipse Award-winning turf male that was campaigned by Nerud. “Now, I’m not one of these guys that is going to breed mares based on sixth and seventh generation, but the short answer is, there was a lot going on in the first dam [Sue’s Good News] and it was a beautiful first dam. There was a lot of beauty in the family and I thought I could work with that. She was a beautiful Indian Charlie mare. I loved the fact that it was Indian Charlie, because it goes back to Caro (Ire),” sire of the aforementioned Cozzene.
Albina was well-acquainted with the Caro-line, as Buckram Oak raced the sire’s son Siberian Express, a $320,000 purchase out of the 1984 Keeneland July Sale by Mahmoud Foustok. Siberian Express was, in turn, the sire of In Excess (Ire), who was bred and raced through part of his career by Mahmoud Foustok’s brother, Ahmed.
“It’s been proven time and time again that this European influence of Caro coming through, for whatever reasons, has been very good for American racing and keeps on coming up.”
Kateri foaled a colt by Paynter the day after her purchase and Albina was pleased with what he saw.
“I thought the Paynter was a pretty good horse,” he said. “I kind of gave her a pass being her first foal, she wasn’t a spectacular sort of specimen. Then we went to Tiznow and that was a magnificent horse. We took it to auction and no one wanted the horse. Nick and I decided we weren’t going to let this beautiful horse go, Tiznow was a little cold. So we tried to sell him again and the same thing happened, we didn’t get the money we wanted. Nick took the horse down to Florida and started prepping him. He went to the sale and that’s when Red Oak bought in and we raced it together.”
Bought back for $275,000 at Keeneland September in 2018, the Tiznow colt was led out unsold on a bid of $175,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale. Connections’ faith in the colt was rewarded when he fetched $420,000 at the OBS April Sale in early 2019.
“He was a stunning horse and the money we got from the 2-year-old sale kind of validated what we thought about the mare,” Albina said. “Since I held the Tiznow in high regard, I said, ‘Now it’s time to make a move with this mare’ and overbreed her a touch. We made a jump to Curlin, he was a stallion we really liked at the time. He was much cheaper than he is now and physically, we loved him.
He continued, “In [Kateri’s] second dam you have Easyfromthegitgo (Dehere), Deputy Minister-line, similar to Curlin on the bottom, and it had worked on the pedigree with Conquest Curlgirl [a daughter of Easyfromthegitgo’s GSW half-sister Sue’s Good News]. Typically I look for something a little closer, but it was close enough to where I was OK with it and the physical really worked.”
Kateri dropped her Curlin filly Mar. 28, 2018, and she was as straight-forward as could be, Albina remembers, as she grew up and as she was prepped for a date in the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.
“What stood out about her was how unremarkable the process was,” he said. “She was always a very good-looking horse, always well-balanced, there were never any issues. She got to the sale and looked beautiful, took it all in stride, never any hiccups. It’s not always that way. I don’t her ever being sick, I don’t remember any issue with her. She got to Saratoga and we had a very good sale. She was our highest-priced horse that year.”
The Kateri filly caught the eye of the team at Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation, who were extended to $725,000.
“This was the best horse we had for Newtown Anner that year,” he said. “We thought about keeping her, but we set a line on her and if we get more than our number, we’ll let her go and if not, we’ll race her. That’s kind of the exercise we do with all our horses.”
Albina, who consigns yearlings with Ron Blake as Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, also sold Peter Brant a Quality Road filly for $525,000 that year. Now named Boston Post Road, that full-sister to MSW & GSP Top Quality was a maiden winner at first asking at Gulfstream Park Feb. 7.
Albina said that the philosophy of Newtown Anner is to “breed the horses we typically don’t go out and buy.”
“Then we test the market and we trade,” he explained. “For [Souper Sensational], our reserve would have been very high and if someone paid it, they could have her and if not, then she comes back and we get to keep a nice horse. We aren’t going out there and buying million-dollar horses or consistently paying $500,000 and $600,000 for horses. If we can sell the ones that bring in excess of what they’re worth, that’s kind of the goal. The stuff we don’t like, we put little to no reserve on and move them on. We just try to make good decisions and I think offering all our yearlings at auction is a mechanism by which we can keep ourselves sharp and that we’re making good business decisions.”
After graduating and earning her ‘Rising Star’ at first asking, Souper Sensational added a facile success in the Glorious Song S. at Woodbine last October. The chestnut exits a good second when trying two turns and dirt for the first time in the Jan. 16 Silverbulletday S., and Albina believes she’ll continue to improve from here.
“I think she’s going to get better and better with distance,” he said. “We’ll let her show us. I’m not worried about any surface with her, I think her action tells me she can be very good on the dirt. I think she got a little unlucky in her last start, but she finished well. Some people are disappointed when they finish second, but I think the races she has to win are ahead of her. I’m very pleased with everything she’s done so far.”
While Souper Sensational has done her part to enhance her page, the family remains live elsewhere. Kateri’s Grade I-winning half-sister Tiz Miz Sue (Tiznow) is not only the dam of the Japanese-based, UAE Group 3-placed Serein (Uncle Mo), but also of $2.5-million KEESEP graduate Tatweej (Tapit), a hugely impressive allowance winner at Aqueduct Feb. 4. Another half-sister, Tiz News (Tiznow), is the dam of 2020 Trapeze S. runner-up Tiz Splendid News (Maclean’s Music), who has returned to the worktab at Keeneland for trainer Wesley Ward. Tiz News changed hands for $190,000 in foal to Curlin’s champion son Good Magic at KEENOV last fall.
Albina reports that Kateri’s foal of 2019, a colt by Maclean’s Music, was ticketed for last year’s Saratoga Sale, but was sadly put down after suffering a freak injury. The agent said that Souper Sensational’s yearling full-sister “resembles her sister greatly and we’re very excited about her” and will be aimed at one of the major yearling sales later this year. Kateri is currently carrying to American Pharoah on a later cover and is booked back to Curlin for this year.

Keepmeinmind Staying Put for Southwest

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 6:12 pm |
Back to: Top News Updated: February 10, 2021 at 6:13 pm
Keepmeinmind | Robert Yates

Despite the weather-enforced postponement of the GIII Southwest S., Keepmeinmind (Laoban) will remain in his stall at Oaklawn Park and will pass this weekend’s GII Risen Star S. at the Fair Grounds, trainer Robertino Diodoro confirmed Wednesday.
“In the end, I feel better running him out of his own stall,” Diodoro said.
The bay colt, who was third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before breaking his maiden in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 28, turned in his sixth breeze of the year Monday in Hot Springs, going a half-mile in :49.60 beneath jockey David Cohen.

“David did a great job again working him,” said Diodoro, Oaklawn’s leading trainer last year. “A horse like him, as aggressive as he is, you get the wrong guy on him and all of sudden your nice, easy half-mile work could turn into :45, :46. Even with those other works, it’s the same thing. He’s a horse that you’ve definitely got to have the right guy on or you could really blow a work.”
The Southwest is also likely to attract champion Essential Quality (Tapit) and MGISW Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music).

Kentucky State Senate passes historical racing games legislation

The Kentucky State Senate reportedly passed legislation yesterday that would officially change the definition of parimutuel wagering so as to allow licensed facilities in the southern state to continue offering historical racing games.
According to a Tuesday report from The Courier-Journal newspaper, the Republican-controlled chamber ratified Senate Bill 120 by a vote of 22 to 15 following heavy lobbying from the local horseracing industry. The move purportedly came after the Kentucky Supreme Court last year ruled that the games, which resemble slots often found in casinos, did not constitute legal parimutuel wagering and should be removed from tracks.
Immediate itinerary:
The newspaper reported that Senate Bill 120, which was sponsored by Kentucky State Senator John Schickel, is now destined to head to a vote before the 100-seat Kentucky House of Representatives where a similar outcome would send it to the desk of Democratic Governor Andy Beshear. The local horseracing industry purportedly believes that the legislation’s successful passage would allow it to protect its future and save thousands of at-risk jobs in ‘The Bluegrass State’ including some 1,400 positions at Boone County’s Turfway Park.
Gubernatorial grant:
The Courier-Journal reported that Beshear used a Tuesday press conference to detail that he would be pleased to approve Senate Bill 120 should pass through the Kentucky House of Representatives as historical racing games are directly responsible for around $15 million in annual tax revenues. The Kentucky Equine Education Project advocacy group purportedly similarly praised the ratification and declared that the ultimate success of the legislation would ‘protect important jobs and investment in communities across the commonwealth.’
Reportedly read a statement from the Kentucky Equine Education Project…
“The future of the horse industry and Kentucky’s economy is in legislators’ hands and real jobs and livelihoods are at risk. A vote to keep historical horseracing in Kentucky is a vote for Kentucky families and the industry that supports them.”
Fitful future:
However, it reportedly remains uncertain as to whether the Kentucky House of Representatives will pass Senate Bill 120 with many critics asserting that the measure is unconstitutional as historical racing games can only be approved by means of a statewide referendum. Kentucky State Senator Damon Thayer purportedly stated that such an exercise, even if it was successful, would likely keep the lucrative units out of the state’s tracks until late next year at the earliest and lead to the closure of ‘three to four racetracks’ by the end of 2021.

Back to: Top News Updated: February 10, 2021 at 3:09 pm

With extreme cold temperatures and the possibility of ice in and around Hot Springs, Arkansas, Oaklawn park has cancelled its live racing programs from Saturday, Feb. 13 through Monday, Feb. 15, and will reschedule the three graded and one listed stakes that were set to take place.
“The weather forecast does not look promising this weekend between the ice and frigid temperatures, so out of consideration for the safety of the horses, our horsemen and fans, we wanted to make this call as soon as possible,” Oaklawn General Manager Wayne Smith said. “We appreciate the cooperation we have received from our horsemen and Racing Commission. Though we are frustrated Mother Nature has thrown us a curveball, our rescheduled stakes will create a spectacular weekend of racing next week.”
The GIII Bayakoa S., the GIII Razorback H. and the GIII Southwest S. have been pushed back to Saturday, Feb. 20, while the Dixie Belle S. and Downthedustyroad S. will now run Sunday, Feb. 21. Entries for the Feb. 20 program will be taken Sunday, Feb. 14. The track will stage 11 live races Feb. 20 and 10 races Feb. 21.

Oaklawn is expected to conduct live racing Thursday and Friday, Feb. 11 and 12, with post time at 1 p.m. CT each day. The casino and simulcast racing will remain open all weekend. Lys Gracieux Produces First Foal

By Alan Carasso Between them, they won two Japanese Horse of the Year titles, three additional divisional awards and four major races on foreign soil. Late Sunday evening, Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry Jpn) was represented by her first foal when she produced a colt by the brilliant Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero Jpn).
Trained by Yoshito Yahagi and carrying the green-and-white colours of Carrot Farm, Lys Gracieux retired to stud in 2019 after winning seven of her 22 trips to the post, four of which came at the highest level. The dark bay, now seven, defeated her peers for a maiden Group 1 in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup in 2018 before just failing to catch Exultant (Ire) (Teofilo Ire) in that year’s G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase. She concluded her career with defeats of males in her final three appearances–the G1 Takarazuka Kinen, the G1 Cox Plate in Melbourne (see below) and a smashing five-length success over two-time Horse of the Year Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa Jpn) and others in the G1 Arima Kinen (video). She was named Horse of the Year in 2019.

Maurice was campaigned by Kazumi Yoshida and came to hand as a 4-year-old, winning the G1 Yasuda Kinen, G1 Mile Championship and G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile in succession in 2015 to secure Horse of the Year honours. He added an additional three top-level scores in 2016, easily taking the G1 Champions’ Mile back at Sha Tin in May before wrapping up his career with facile wins in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup, both over 2000 metres.
From his first crop to the races in 2020, Maurice was the sire of 32 winners for progeny earnings of better than ¥393 million. He was second to Duramente (Jpn) in each of those categories. He is the sire of Group 3 winner Pixie Knight (Jpn) and four other black-type performers.
Maurice is also the sire of 3-year-old colt Buena Ventura (Jpn), a son of 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (Jpn) (Special Week Jpn), and is also responsible for the 3-year-old filly Geraldina (Jpn), whose dam Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact Jpn) was Japan’s Horse of the Year in 2012 and 2014. Gentildonna is due to Maurice for 2021.

Overnight races on the Mar. 6 undercard will see their purses increased by $15,000 each, an effort to ensure large fields and to reward owners and trainers that continue to support the local racing product on its biggest days.

The Election May Be Over, but Steve Kornacki Not Done Analyzing Races

This Saturday, Steve Kornacki, a national political correspondent for NBC News, will compile and study reams of data and make informed decisions. But he won’t be trying to figure out if the numbers say that Joe Biden Jr. will beat Donald Trump in Pennsylvania or anything else politically related. His main concern will be who is going to win the feature at Gulfstream Park.
Kornacki is well known to NBC and MSNBC viewers and political junkies. For hours before and after each election, stationed in front of an electoral map, he’s the one making sense of the numbers, trends and voting patterns. Able to continue on for days at a time without sleep, Kornacki has been called a national treasure. That doesn’t leave Kornacki with a lot of free time, but he still manages to carve out a few hours every weekend to enjoy one of his favorite hobbies, betting the races. He normally has Saturdays off, so that’s when he takes a deep dive into the past performances and bets on the major tracks running that day.
Like many, Kornacki, 41, was introduced to racing by a relative. He had an uncle who owned a business in Maine and would take his young nephew to the harness races at Scarborough Downs.

“I was pretty young when I got into it,” he said. “My uncle owns a beach store in Southern Maine and when I was six or seven years old, he took me one night during the summer to Scarborough Downs. This was the late eighties, so there was no simulcasting or anything. It was just the trotters. I picked five straight winners that night. He still talks about that and he didn’t bet any of them. I don’t think I’ve had a night like that since.”
It was that same uncle who taught him a system, the 13 system. Kornacki acknowledges that it may be a silly way to play the races, but he still incorporates it into his handicapping.
“It might be the stupidest system you’ve ever heard of, but we swear by it,” he said. “It’s called the 13 system. My uncle got it from a guy who was a jockey agent back at Suffolk Downs in the sixties. It’s very simple. The last three finishes, if they add up to a 13 you bet the horse. It’s the first thing I look for now when I get a program. I go through every race and circle them. Last Saturday at Aqueduct, in the second to last race, the winner was 19-1 and he was a 13 horse. It forces you to take a horse you otherwise would never take. When they come in, you can hit a big payout.”
Kornacki grew up in Groton, Massachusetts, a short distance from Suffolk Downs and Rockingham Park, and would spend many a day or night at those tracks while in high school or later at college at Boston University. Starting with Alysheba in 1987, he began following the Triple Crown races closely every year.
Someone with an analytical mind, he’s moved on from picking names and numbers and relying solely on the 13 system. Kornacki enjoys trying to solve the handicapping puzzle and though he says he’s not very good at it, there have been some memorable hits along the way.
“The biggest payout I ever got when I really handicapped a race would have been the 2002 Pacific Classic,” he said. “My horse was Came Home. War Emblem was running and all the money was on War Emblem. I believed in Came Home, loaded up on him, and he won.”
Politics and horse racing don’t exactly go together, but Kornacki finds that he often uses racing terms when analyzing an election. With 90% of the precincts reporting, Kornacki might say that election is coming “down the stretch.” On the night of the New Hampshire primary, he mentioned Rockingham Park when going over the vote totals for Rockingham County.
“What everybody seems to notice is when I use the terminology,” he said. “Unconsciously, I use so much of the language of horse racing because it applies to a political race and to election returns. I’ve definitely done that a lot on the air.”
From time to time, he gets to talk actual racing. A few years ago, he was hosting a show on MSNBC on the night before the GI Kentucky Derby and the subject turned to the race.
“I was sitting in for Brian Williams and we did a Kentucky Derby preview,” Kornacki said. “I told them at the outset that my track record was not that impressive. They ran a banner at the bottom of the screen that said ‘Steve is really bad at picking horses.’ I definitely didn’t have the winner.”
After the 2020 election, NBC decided to let Kornacki branch out and he was used on NFL broadcasts. Using the same style he uses for political races, Kornacki broke down the NFL playoff picture.
“I loved doing that,” he said. “I was so psyched to get that opportunity. I am an NFL fan, so I didn’t think, in terms of the subject that it would be a reach for me. My concern when they first reached out to me was that I didn’t want it to become gimmicky. We did playoff probabilities, which was the perfect way in. The minute we put the graphics together I could see that it was a logical extension of what I’ve been doing. I hope it didn’t come across as a gimmick at all because it was real information and the spotting of trends.”
With NBC having the rights to the Triple Crown races and the Breeders’ Cup, perhaps there is a way to include Kornacki and what he does on racing broadcasts. He’s not quite sure how that would work, but says if it ever came up he would be interested., even if he’s not the best handicapper out there.
“From my standpoint, I’d love to see if there is something possible with the racing shows,” he said. “They have Eddie O (Olczyk) to do the handicapping. My friends and family have said don’t let them talk you into doing the handicapping because you’ll embarrass yourself. That’s probably right. So we probably will have to come up with something else for me to do.”
